Senior Systems Engineer (Tooling & Automation)
Listed May 5, 2026 and accepting applications until closed (anticipated late May)
About Us
For roughly 500,000 years, humans have been burning stuff to heat our homes, burning stuff to light our homes, and burning stuff to power our machines. It’s 2026, people. Let’s change that.
Right now, homes account for roughly 20% of the world’s carbon emissions. Here at Elephant Energy, we know that there is a better way. As a certified B Corp, we are committed to building a one-stop shop that makes it easy to upgrade to a climate-friendly home. We enable homeowners to confidently make the switch to modern, electric technologies and get their homes off of fossil fuels – all at once, or over time.
Location: Remote with strong preference for Denver (must overlap with Mountain Time)

About The Role
What you would be doing: We are excited to add a Senior Systems Engineer (Tooling & Automation) to our team! Reporting to the Christine Mikulski, this role will own our tooling infrastructure and workflow automation layer—making the company faster, more efficient, and less manual.
We’re looking for someone who is deeply technical, AI-first, and builder-minded—someone who ships quickly, automates relentlessly, and sees systems, not silos. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Big Things:
Own the Tooling Infrastructure
- Define how our systems connect (APIs, webhooks, integrations)
- Determine where logic lives (CRM vs internal tools vs automation layer)
- Ensure reliability, scalability, and maintainability of workflows
Build Automation & Integrations (Core of the Role)
- Write and ship code daily using AI tools (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, ChatGPT)
- Build integrations across CRM, operations, and support systems
- Create automations using APIs, webhooks, no-code tools (Zapier/Make), and custom scripts
- Own systems beyond initial build—ensure they work, scale, and don’t break
Eliminate Manual Work
- Identify repetitive, error-prone workflows across teams
- Replace them with automated, system-driven execution
- Continuously improve speed, accuracy, and scalability
Define the Source of Truth
- Ensure clean, consistent data flow across systems
- Reduce duplication and inconsistencies
- Help establish where key data lives and how it moves
Build Internal Tools
- Use tools like Retool, Airtable, or lightweight frontends
- Create simple, high-leverage interfaces for operators
- Prioritize speed and usability over perfection
Drive Efficiency Across the Company
- Partner with Sales, Ops, and Support teams
- Translate problems into automated solutions quickly
- Continuously ask: “Why is a human doing this?”
Lead a Small Team
- Manage and develop a small, high-performing technical team
- Remove blockers and ensure high-priority work ships on time
- Maintain a fast, agile, builder culture
Contribute to Culture
- Actively perpetuate an inclusive, equitable, and collaborative working environment where psychological safety comes first
Little Things:
- Document systems and workflows clearly
- Maintain and monitor integrations and automations
- Troubleshoot issues quickly and pragmatically
- Continuously evaluate tools and improve the stack
- Make smart build vs. buy decisions
What you won’t be doing:
- Sitting in long planning cycles without shipping
- Writing specs that never turn into production
- Optimizing for perfection over speed and impact
- Operating as a pure people manager without building
Timeline for role expectations:
Within one month, you will:
- Understand current systems, workflows, and pain points
- Ship your first automations and integrations
- Identify top opportunities to eliminate manual work
Within three months, you will:
- Own key workflows across sales and operations
- Replace multiple manual processes with automation
- Establish clearer system architecture and data flows
Within six months, you will:
- Build a scalable automation layer across the business
- Improve system reliability and data consistency significantly
- Develop and support a small, high-performing team
At one year:
- Fully own the company’s tooling and automation infrastructure
- Drive step-function improvements in operational efficiency
- Establish Elephant as a highly automated, systems-driven company
Success in this role looks like / can be measured as:
- Significant reduction in manual work across teams
- Faster execution and fewer operational bottlenecks
- Clean, reliable data across systems
- High adoption and usability of internal tools
- A culture of automation and efficiency embedded across the company
You're a great fit for this role if you have:
Experience:
- 4–8 years of experience in systems engineering, technical operations, or similar builder roles
- 2–3 years managing small, agile teams
- Strong full-stack background with deep backend experience (APIs, integrations, data models)
- Proven experience building automations, integrations, or internal tools
- Experience in fast-paced or startup environments
Technical capability (non-negotiable):
- You code regularly (AI-assisted is expected)
- Comfortable with APIs, webhooks, and integrations
- Experience with scripting languages (Python, JavaScript, or similar)
- Basic data modeling / SQL
- Daily use of AI coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, ChatGPT)
- Strong judgment on build vs buy, and code vs no-code
Tools / Stack Experience (Examples):
- Retool, Airtable, or similar platforms
- Salesforce or other CRM systems
- Basic cloud/backend familiarity
Mindset:
- Mission-driven
- Builder-first—you ship, not spec
- High agency—you find and fix problems
- Grit—climate work requires hard work
- Efficiency-obsessed—you hate wasted time
- Pragmatic—you prioritize speed and impact
- Systems thinker—you understand how everything connects
Indicators this may not be the right role for you:
- You prefer planning over building
- You are uncomfortable owning systems end-to-end
- You rely heavily on others to identify problems or drive work
- You don’t feel aligned with our mission to electrify homes and decarbonize the built environment
Total Compensation
We offer competitive cash compensation, meaningful equity, and strong benefits that reflect our values:
- $150,000 – $180,000 base salary
- Stock options, commensurate with experience and aligned with internal equity bands
- Health Care: 100% employer-paid base plan; 50% for dependents
- 401(k): 4% company match
- Flexible and Unlimited PTO
- Home electrification incentives
- Remote-first work culture; must overlap with Mountain Time Zone
Location
While this role has a strong preference for Denver, Elephant Energy is a remote-first company. You must be based in the U.S. and able to consistently work within +/- 3 hours of Mountain Time. We gather as a team semi-annually in Colorado.
